Methinks Thou Dost Protest Too Much

Protesting too much – now there’s a hot topic.

Shakespeare exposed this phoney practise through the character of Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude, when she comments wryly on a play inside of a play.

Vehemently insisting on insincere overacting shows that the opposite of what one is protesting is probably the truth.

Take George Floyd’s death for example.

This was a moment where everyone who saw that awful snuff film were unified in their disgust and feelings of wanting to see justice be served to the psycho-killer-cop, Chauvin.

But then what happens?

As if a Black man’s murder in their midst is spectacularly unusual, Black Americans descended into openly criminal acts to draw attention to what they claim killed Floyd – not Chauvin, but the conveniently abstract “systemic racism.”

They managed to take the crime away from the individuals who actually perpetrated it and place it collectively onto the heads of innocent people who had nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Then they repeated a lie over and over again:  “Police keep killing black men, police keep killing black men.”  The lie then feels like the truth – but it’s not, it’s a pernicious lie.

In America, black men who die by homicide are almost always murdered by other black men who are not cops but criminals.  But nobody cares for facts anymore. Only feelings seem to count.

The protesting mobs are yelling that they protest “systemic racism” and the collective “system” is what is deemed to be at fault.  But the truth is, what is at fault is the amount of black people conducting too much of the crime with no remedy in sight.

Bringing this into a New Zealand context, Andrew Little, another one who doth protest too much, says in a recent interview:

“When well over half of the men in our prisons are Maori, when nearly two-thirds of women in our prisons are Maori, that tells you there is something wrong with the system.”

How tiresomely mindless.

No, Mr. Little, it tells you there is something wrong with Maori.  Stop trying to ingratiate yourself with our Maori brethren to alleviate your own wilfully chosen white guilt.

On the back of the imported, copy-cat protesting too much, a Maori man with his blood up came out of the woodwork and threatened to again vandalise the statue of Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton (naval commander and captain of the 43rd regiment at the Battle of Gate Pa in Tauranga during the New Zealand Wars in Hamilton).

Mr. Taitimu Maipi openly acknowledged he was going to break the laws of the land and engage in the vandalising of this statue, as he has done before.

That is partly why far too many Maori men are in prison.  By his threats, which are certainly not idle ones, Mr. Maipi sets the example of an elder to younger Maori men that to be a vandal and show outright disrespect for property is not only okay, it’s right.

Mr. Maipi said that Captain Hamilton was “a murderous arsehole” standing in the city as though he was a hero.  “How can that be?” he said, “How can we accept that he’s a hero when he’s a monster who led battles?”

So rather than arresting this unthinking man, who is so clearly full of hate toward our white forefathers that even statues to their memory are threatened with his primitive vandalism – the council kowtowed to his threats and had the statue removed nice and neatly themselves to avoid any trouble.  That’s called appeasement.

What a ridiculous joke to hear Mr. Maipi talking with a straight face about “murderous arseholes” and “monsters who led battles,” when those of us who read, know New Zealand history and are also fully aware of the utterly savage behaviour of the famous 19th Century Maori chief, Te Kooti, during the NZ Wars – a native boy so wild his own father tried to kill him when he was a teen – who grew into a notorious guerrilla fighter who murdered many men, women and children who were both Maori and white.

Let’s not also forget old Hongi Hika, as Mr. Maipi obviously has, another chief who was highly skilled at preserving the severed heads of his tribal enemies to say nothing of cooking and eating their butts with leaves and salt, while keeping their wives and children as slaves (and as a fresh food supply).

A Star newspaper article from the 21st September 1907, by E.M Dunlop, a column which took pains to remember the unvarnished truth about New Zealand’s famous Maori Chiefs, wrote of Hongi Hika:

“As soon as his preparations were completed, Hongi set out on a terrific raid to try the power of the weapons he had acquired, and for many years the whole countryside was DRENCHED IN MAORI BLOOD.

[With one hand he]… shielded the missionaries, with the other he spread death and destruction among the tribes of his enemies, and revelled in slaughter and cannibalism.  His enemies were completely at his mercy, for he had firearms and they had none….
He sailed up the Waikato and Thames Rivers in his war canoes, desolating and ravaging the country; he dragged his canoes across the Auckland isthmus and sailed down the Manukau, and slaughtered the inhabitants of the West Coast by many thousands.”

Speaking from the same Waikato which Hongi drenched in Maori blood, Mr. Maipi would do well to remember history with a bit more balance than his ignorant complaint of “my people good, your people arseholes” lack of mental acuity allows for. Honestly, that this even needs to be said in the Information Age smacks of pathos.

What if some enraged white person who’s had a gut full of this one-sided race-baiting – goes out on a chainsaw massacre of Maori carvings and Pouwhenuas in the name of the violent vandalism now being dished out to our heritage monuments – of Hamilton, of Cook and the rest – our venerated ancestors. What then?

Will Mr. Maipi’s ilk consider that utu?  I doubt it, but I would. So would many other Kiwis who are watching people protest too much about what happened in a far off place called Minneapolis to a poor black man named George Floyd. Tosh!
This isn’t about Floyd at all.  They know it. Something far more local and sinister has found the excuse it needs to feel emboldened to be violent – and it’s wrong.

If this is what some Maoris genuinely want done to just the memory and image of our ancestors, imagine what they must want to do to us living today, and our offspring?

Smashing up historic monuments is a new level of low that tells a tale on a present desire for bloodshed. The vandalism of our historical legacy is a hostile, destructive crime that shall be noted and remembered as such.

Maori and New Zealand Pakeha, like Black Americans and White Americans, have often fought on the same side of nobler wars together in conflicts against real slavery, i.e, the Confederates and the Nazis, and all the smaller wars of the 20th Century.  We did this because the best of us were all patriots – lovers of the land, lovers of freedom, lovers of the past and future generations and the natural struggle to improve our standard of living and camaraderie.  I think most Kiwis still feel that way, if we were ever asked.

This current attention-seeking opportunism detracts in an insincere manner from the human values which have often united us as one people, and that’s why methinks thou dost protest too much.

Race Victim Business Booms Even During Covid

So many genuine businesses have been left struggling in the aftermath of the job-killing lockdown, but not the contrived race victim business. That senseless enterprise thrives with self-righteous boldness as it shamelessly capitalises on the horrible death of George Floyd.

Floyd’s killers will be brought to justice. The exploiters of his death, who left violence, vandalism and destruction resulting in murders in their wake, will not be.

White liberals seem to be consumed by the white guilt narratives they’ve cowardly swallowed and are all “taking the knee” (an odd term after the way Floyd was killed) to signal the depth of their humble repentance for having defectively racist DNA.

Police all over the Western world stood aside and let the indignant angry mobs desecrate war memorials and revered statues of our heroes, such as Churchill and Lincoln, that were even urinated upon in broad daylight. It’s repulsive to watch these savages of every colour get away with it.

On the Queen’s Birthday public holiday in New Zealand an indignant copy-cat crowd of 4000 broke all the level 2 lockdown rules of social distancing and cozied up in Aotea Square to “protest racism” and support Black Lives Matter, ostensibly because of what happened to Floyd in Minneapolis. Humbug!

This was an act of groupthink by a whole lot of young people with a herd mentality who are on mass government Covid-welfare and suffering from chronic boredom since the country locked down in March.  They needed a so-called righteous cause to occupy their vain little empty heads and it was provided to them by BLM activist/organisers.

This racism business is all just nonsense, a mass effort to assert mob tyranny in America.

“Defund the police!” They scream, while they plot to form their own politically-correct Stasi in Minneapolis, where their City Council President Lisa Bender says with a straight face that calling the police to protect you during a home break-in “comes from a place of privilege.”  The woman is clearly a lunatic, but I hope she gets given a much wider sphere of influence as nothing would hand the election to Trump quicker than a Democrat policy to actually defund the police.

No Western country is racist anymore. There’s not even a lingering hangover from old world racism. It’s the very opposite now – white Western nations have fancifully fawned over their minority communities in the last 50 years, indulging them, encouraging them to play the victim and even paying them money to do so, all while ignoring their painfully massive crime rates. And like a bunch of spoiled little brats who never get told “No!”, these overly entitled minorities (and the liberal whites who make a big deal about being on their side) are now throwing destructive tantrums which have led to the deaths of others in America, such as St. Louis police Captain David Dorn (77 years), Oakland Federal Protective Service Officer Patrick Underwood (53 years), Davenport woman Italia Marie Kelly (22 years), Indianapolis man Chris Beaty (38 years) and Indianapolis teenager Dorian Murrell (18 years).  All of these fatalities were black lives that were taken during the looting and riots.

Horace Cooper, Co-Chairman of Project 21 Black Leadership Network makes the point perfectly when he says that America has spent $22 trillion of tax-payer money on “problem solving” and all it has managed to do is enrich the “problem solving class,” so they can have ski holidays in Aspen and drive expensive cars.

“We need victims,” says Cooper, “There is a class of Americans whose entire livelihood is based on the existence of victims…. There is a strong sentiment among the so-called problem-solving class to keep things as they are.”

Cooper explains to Tucker Carlson that before the Social Justice problem-solving class took over, black Americans had above-average levels of family stability, educational attainment and literacy just prior to the advent of social justice policies that were enacted to solve society’s problems. Yet these policies have made things worse.

The race victim business is booming and it seems like the Covid lockdown helped it along.

The Tragic Worldview Versus the Therapeutic

When it comes to democracy, both ancient and modern, there are forces which compete at its heart serving as a moral tension which give the whole system a certain vigour, until it unravels either through mob-tyranny or outright dictatorship.

In ancient Athens, arguments were had over equality versus freedom, an old left/right divide between those who believed that people were not equal and then those who believed that they could be made equal if human nature could just be overridden a little – or a lot.

The progressive view still insists today that equality is more important than freedom, therefore welcomes, or at least tolerates, state intrusion into the lives and livelihoods of citizens to see wealth redistributed “more equally.”

The conservative view resents this meddling and places a premium on individual freedom, recognising (occasionally) that if individual rights can be overridden for the sake of the wellbeing of others, where does the sacrifice end?

Progressives on both the Left and Right are addicted to societal meddling – and there really is no end to it. All things can be fixed, remedied or improved in their view. Utopia is always just one more government programme away (or execution away in the case of communist countries) from being ushered in, if only those other bastards would stop being so myopically selfish and go along with it all unquestioningly.

Conservatives tend to see human nature as more immutable across time. There are limits which are informed by reality as to what humans can achieve, or not, and above all, humans are fallible creatures whose mistakes can often define them well beyond a single lifespan. Conservatives want to be pretty much left alone to do their best for themselves and their families and afford other people the same courtesy to do likewise. Folks must stand or fall, succeed or fail, live or die, on their own merits, talents, achievements and plans. There it is.

Early Western thought fully absorbed both these world views – the Greek tragic outlook and the Judaeo-Christian therapeutic view.  This was the marriage of the ideas of Athens and Jerusalem, officiated in the bosom of the Roman Empire where they eventually bonded in jurisprudence.

By the time that the Renaissance bloomed in Europe circa 1500, reviving an interest in Greco-Roman literature and art, morality and metaphysical thought expressed human nature at its most heroic, fateful, grotesque, tragic and redemptive through the insightful pen of William Shakespeare – Henry V, Romeo and Juliette, The Tempest, MacBeth, King Lear, Richard III and Antony and Cleopatra.

Politically, Elizabeth I transformed her insignificant island nation into something of a European super-power during her long 44-year reign, which was her sealed fate to inherit by virtue of nothing other than her bloodline as King Henry VIII's daughter. Yet her reign saw little peace as the Reformation raged on, a return to the “one true church of Rome” never about to happen on her faithful Protestant watch. After her death, many of her subjects fled England forever to escape sectarian violence, landing on Virginia’s shores in the New World – redemptive namesakes if ever there were.

The Constitution of the Founding Fathers of America some 150 years later was the handiwork of Puritan culture being tempered and prescribed by the intellectual currents of the European Enlightenment, at the same time as being brought down to its base level of Original Sin by locking the institution of black slavery well within the parchment and ink of the document itself.

I was interested this afternoon to listen to an excellent interview with George Friedman on the Leighton Smith Podcast which touched on these very topics I’d been engaged with for the last few days.

There is no sweeping remedy for the black vs white dilemma which America regularly falls prey to, according to Friedman, since it’s in the nation’s DNA from its inception and often over-boils.

Rather than be remedied across the board in some therapeutic manner, the way ahead after these recent tumultuous riots (orchestrated by ANTIFA thugs), is doing what America has always had to do – seek justice through the rule of law and live with the results. Not every problem has a solution but in this case, George Floyd’s killer will go to trial and face justice.

We live within the confines of human nature and reality, not Utopia.  An idea, let alone a massive nation, does not have to be perfect to be considered good.

In his interview with Smith, Friedman underscored an important point: the whole of Europe, Africa and Arabia practised slavery, in fact America had acquired the practice from the Dutch, yet all the European nations rid themselves of it without the need for a massive civil war. The potent flashpoint of the “sin” being “unforgivable” in America exists in the Framers of the Constitution knowing slavery was evil, yet writing it into the laws of the Republic despite claiming to believe that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.”

The fact that the Framers’ descendants are still being held responsible for the consequences of that sin, despite heroes like Lincoln seeking countermeasures through virtue, through war and the resulting Thirteenth Amendment, even losing his own life for his efforts, to say nothing of the many Northern Americans who fought on the side of the Union – and everything that has transpired since to give the descendants of slaves equality and freedom – smacks of a Greek tragedy of epic proportion.

The age old tension between equality and freedom still dogs us 2300 years after the ancient Greek versions of democracy, but it has to be said that it dogs us now mostly because it’s a topic which gets exacerbated by the aggressive pedlars of victimology who push for more and more state controls, including financial dependencies and monetary reparations, which are ongoing forms of permanent looting.

It is not anyone’s place to feel guilty for what their distant ancestors did or didn’t do. Do Europeans, some of whose descendants like myself now live in NZ, demand reparations with a straight face from the Vatican over the massacres of the French Huguenots in the 16th Century?
